So here is my post for May… and I promise I will try to do better at keeping my Blog updated. Also, I am trying to make it a lot less business-centric than it has been in the months. I want my Blog to be about real life and not business lessons. Maybe I’ll throw the odd lesson in, but it’ll be related specifically to my life.
The new Guitar Arrives……
This past week I took possession of my beautiful new hand-built guitar. I’ve been waiting for it for about 10 months. It was designed and built by George Rizsanyi, the builder of the “six string nation guitar”. In case you haven’t heard of this very special heritage guitar, 63 pieces of wood representing Canadian history… ranging from Paul Henderson’s hockey stick to a piece of Massey Hall… where used to build this historic, one-of-a-kind instrument. You can see it at http://www.flickr.com/photos/sixstringnation/sets/ and http://sixstringnation.com/en/.
George is a true artist and certainly held nothing back on my guitar when he built it. It was built from wood representing three important pieces of my history (not sixty three - I’m not a country) and sounds like nothing I have ever heard. The first piece of wood found in the neck of the instrument is a piece of the famous Nova Scotia schooner, “The Blue Nose”. I was born in Nova Scotia so it was very fitting that it be a major piece. The second piece which framed the inside of the guitar was built from the longest covered bridge in the world in Hartland, New Brunswick, which is where I spent most of my early years. The third piece, a piece of the Hartland High School stage (the first I ever performed on) was used to create the cosmetics of the guitar around the sound hole. And finally, the main body and back of the guitar is made from an incredible piece of 200 year old Brazillian rose wood. I have no idea where George got it from, but it's absolutely stunning to look at.
You can see it on my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=49611&id=693605785.
It’s truly a surreal experience to possess such an instrument. Not only do have I have a guitar that plays like a dream, but I now own something of my history that will become part of my children’s history.
The unexpected benefit of receiving this instrument is that I have began to play a lot again... something I have done little of in recent years. I have rediscovered the escape that is music. I had forgotten the power of that. I live a bit of a crazy life filled with stress and seemingly impossible situations. That’s what I do. I’m a problem solver and I don’t think you’ll ever hear me complain about it. But it’s virtually impossible not to carry some of that home with you from time to time. Like most serial entrepreneurs, I get sleep deprived and sometimes have a hard time slowing my brain down and getting back in touch with life’s basics like hanging with my little princesses. It’s amazing what a little butchering of a good song on my new gee-tar will do to relax my mind. Isn’t it amazing what a simple little distraction can do to cure a clogged mind. I feel renewed and I’m making it a habit to pick my new toy up everyday and take it for a little burn.
